What Are Some Common Therapy Programs at Southern Sky?
We use proven, evidence-based therapies in conjunction with a holistic approach that considers the mind, body, and spirit of the individual. The term ‘evidence-based’ simply means that these therapeutic approaches have been used successfully over a long period of time and by a diverse group of therapists and that this data has been studied and published. They are used widely in treatment centers all across the country. Whether you are struggling with substance use disorder or affected by traumatic experiences in your life that are compromising your physical and mental health, we can tailor a treatment plan to you.
Trauma-Informed Therapy
In the case of those struggling with trauma, we use evidence-based approaches such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and Seeking Safety therapy to provide coping skills, regulate thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and relieve symptoms of trauma. By addressing the trauma and employing additional proven therapies, we promote integrative healing that addresses total well-being.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a form of psychotherapy where you meet with a therapist during scheduled sessions. CBT helps you become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking, which allows you to view challenging, stressful situations more clearly and respond to them more effectively. This approach effectively treats substance use disorder and various mental health disorders that often co-occur with SUD, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or depression.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
The main goals of DBT are to teach people how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others. This helps you pay attention to what is happening with you– thoughts, urges, feelings, and sensations–as well as using your senses to tune in to what’s happening around you in an objective way without judgment. Mindfulness skills help you slow down and focus on using healthy coping skills when experiencing emotional pain. The strategy can also help you stay calm and avoid engaging in automatic negative thought patterns and impulsive behavior.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Addiction can often lead to dependence on drugs or alcohol. When a person reaches a state of dependency, they have effectively rewired their brain and body to need the addictive substance to function. Without the substance in their system, they will often experience withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can range from mildly inconvenient to life-threatening. Prescription drugs, such as Suboxone or Vivitrol, are often used to mitigate the effects of withdrawal, especially for those struggling with opioids or alcohol.
While these are three of the most common types of substance use disorder therapy programs, Southern Sky Recovery makes use of many more therapeutic approaches, including:
- Acceptance and commitment therapy
- Anger management
- Anxiety treatment
- Depression treatment
- Family therapy
- Group therapy
With so many evidence-based and holistic therapy programs, we ensure that your treatment is optimized to help you achieve a successful recovery.
